Hannah's Harmony

My amazingly talented friends make this blog thing easy because their homes are so adorable. About a week ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Hannah Martinez, a four month old little diva, who has the cutest little bedroom I've ever seen. She's the envy of the play group, and who can blame her with her own personal decorator, my good friend, Heather.

The best part about this room is the story behind many of its pieces. I asked Heather to share a few words about it, since the story belongs to her.

"
The inspiration behind Hannah's room really came from the mirror above her changing table. It was a piece I already owned but had nowhere in my home to put it. My favorite thing in the room is Hannah's crib, because a crib is the focal point of a nursery. And in this case I individually picked each bedding piece rather than buy a set. The crib skirt I made myself while pregnant, hoping that I'd have a little girl. Letters above cribs are always something I loved. So I couldn't wait to paint my own.

My favorite thing about Hannah's nursery is that most of the decorative items have special stories behind them, and were not just bought off a store shelf because I thought they'd match. The only two items I bought because they went with the theme was the bunny and metal vase on the shelf. The framed birth information card, is a tradition of my mom's when she was a midwife. She'd always made a card and baby bracelet for the babies she delivered.

The piggy bank I won with my tickets at an arcade in Newport Beach when I was a little kid. The big "H" was painted by my big sister as a gift for a sorority tradition. The tutu was handmade by my mom. The rocking chair was the same chair my stepmother-in-law rocked Sergio's baby sister in.

The framed dress was my baby dress. As for the "cowgirl" block, Sergio picked it out when we were shopping. Although I thought it was cute, it didn't go with the room in my head. But he looked so sad when I said no, so I couldn't not find a way to incorporate it. It's something that reflects daddy for his little girl. Which became the idea behind decorating the side table. I incorporated the little things that reflected us.

The Cal bear was a teddy bear Sergio gave to me freshmen year when he picked me up from the airport after Christmas break. Also where we met, he proposed, and our alma mater. The pilot bear we bought at the National Naval Aviation Museum almost a year before Hannah was even an idea. And a bear to remind Hannah of her Daddy when he's flying.

So how much did this room cost? $600. The crib, crib bedding, curtains, and rug being the most expensive items. Everything else I already owned, or bought for a bargain. Even the changing table came from craigslist and got a makeover. It once had a door where the shelves are and no handles. And after gifted cash and gift cards our balance was $300. "

Where can you find your own little piece of harmony? As Heather mentioned, it can easily be found by recycling your old trinkets, shopping on craigslist, and getting in tune with your inner Martha Stewart!
