Consistency

Consistency –noun, plural -cies. 1. agreement, harmony, or compatibility, esp. correspondence or uniformity among the parts of a complex thing: consistency of colors throughout the house.

Let's talk about consistency. Of course, I am probably the last person to be talking about this, especially since I have been terribly inconsistent with keeping up on blog posts! But one thing that is always consistent in my apartment is one or two elements that really let my personality shine through.
For me, it's a quart of A37-3 "Lewisporte" paint and an irresistible checkered fabric from Joann's.

Since moving back to San Francisco and really putting some thought into my home decorating, I have struggled with whether I favor a modern, vintage, cottage, or chic look. The truth is, I am head over heels for them all, so I have chosen to carefully incorporate elements of each into my apartment. This can be very dangerous if you're not careful, and even more dangerous if you're not consistent. You could easily end up with a cluttered mess if you're not careful.

The easiest way to add some consistency to your life is by choosing a favorite color and incorporating it in different ways throughout your living space. I have chosen a subtle aqua color to use in my entry way, living room, and dining room areas.

If you want to be a little braver, you can scout out your favorite pattern and incorporate it into your living space. This can be a bit more tricky, as it can be difficult to find timeless patterns that can survive changing trends. If you're a chronic re-decorator, you may enjoy changing up pattern styles. For me, I'm sort of in the middle. While I wouldn't exactly consider the fabric I have chosen "timeless," I think it will be able to give off the wow-factor for a few more years.

One of the things I like best about this fabric was the fact that it has been predominantly integrated in fashion industry over the past year. It can be found on pea coats in the financial district to silk scarves purses in the marina. The fact that this pattern made me want to go shopping, I think it can be safe to say it fits nicely into the "trendy" category. Although these trendy fabrics can come and go quickly, it is nice to have a bit of consistency in my home...at least for the moment.
